The weather didn’t cooperate, but many individuals and families still came out to attend Bread for Life’s 25th anniversary celebration at Camp Sloper Outdoor Center. The party was held to celebrate the organization’s anniversary and to collect food to “Fill Our Van”. Donations will be used at the Southington Community Pantry, a collaborative effort of Southington Community Services and Bread for Life. At the pantry non-perishable food items are distributed daily to families in need of supplemental groceries.
Bill McDougall, Chairman of the Board of Bread for Life, said, “Because of the weather, some people just drove in and dropped off food. Others stayed to enjoy the party. I am so proud to be a part of this generous, giving community. We put out the call and our neighbors and friends responded by twice filling our van with much needed food. I would also like to thank the many volunteers who worked so hard to make our celebration such a success.”
Janet Mellon, Director of Southington Community Services, stated “Last month we put out the news that we needed food for our pantry and donations came pouring in from churches, clubs, retail establishments and individuals. Because of the response, we were able to meet the needs of the hungry without any interruption. Although the immediate shortage has been dealt with, we want people to know that the need continues. We have gone from 100 individuals being assisted weekly to 500 in just one year. During these difficult economic times and with winter heating needs approaching, we know that that need will continue to grow.”
Non-perishable food donations can be made daily at Bread for Life, Friendship Hall (behind the Masonic Hall), Main Street, Southington, from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or at Southington Community Services, 91 Norton Street, Plantsville, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If anyone has a large donation to make, we will be glad to come pick it up with our van. Please call Eldon Hafford at 860-276-8389 or Janet Mellon at 860-628-3761.
Eldon Hafford, Executive Director of Bread for Life, said, “The motto of our organization is ‘that no one may go hungry’. Because of the generosity of the people in the Southington community, we are meeting our goal in our town. Thank you Southington.”
